After digging into this a bit further, I was able to confirm that these "retries" are not created by stunnel itself. Rather, stunnel is simply trying to forward the connection attempts from NFS. Changing the NFS mount's "timeo" and "retrans" parameters affects duration for which NFS attempts to connect to the server. Thanks, Alan M Varghese
