Static linking is much easier, especially when put in a non-standard place, such as /usr/local/customer-name/lib -- this means if somebody does an update of say openssl alone you won't have this problem. You can also do it non-static as long as it is in a non-standard place and be pretty safe. My versions have stunnel 5.44 and openssl 1.0.2 -- works fine. It is static and keeps on ticking. Somewhere there is a physical network card - checking the firewall/router for traffic is a good idea no matter what it is running on. VMs have lots of clever software to isolate each instance (including resources) and you may be being streamed at a rate the VM as whole can handle, and your isolated VM cannot. And setting the debug level up is still a good idea. And forcing core files and using a debugger is still a good idea. And trying inetd mode is still a good idea. You need to narrow your focus and each of these suggestions will tell you something that narrows the problem. Eric From: Murrey, Brian J. Every once in a while it would spew uncontrollable bytes onto the network. If you open a stunnel connection and it does that this could very well be the problem. If it cheap, try changing the network card. If not, you should be able to look in your firewall/router and it will tell you who is sending what bytes to whomever. See if that machine is indeed streaming the bytes in massive quantities. If not, I would suspect your stunnel is getting stuck in it's own loop. There are a million reasons this can happen (well a few less than a million) - such as maybe a bad library in the FreeBSD or a bad choice in the Makefile - such as doing threads or something in a way your O/S does not like (I use threads=fork or whatever it is, instead of actual threading). You might tinker with some of the options that make the stunnel build and try different ones. Especially if stunnel was compiled on a different version of the O/S - could be differences in bytes in things and who knows what. That is all I can suggest beyond setting the debug level to 7 (I think is highest) and then watching the log file. If it reading from .\config . then I would try putting the path in quotes. If it fails to read the one in \temp but is not reading anything, I would check permissions on the directory and file (easy test is set "everyone" to full permissions, at least as a test). You have to do the entire directory tree (in the case of c:\temp it is just that directory) and the file. One other suggestion - run it in inetd mode. This is MUCH simpler, stunnel will not have to do as much forking and managing and so forth. The O/S will do all that. I know - it is a little less efficient. However, I have found on modern Centos and AIX computers that even with very high volumes it makes no measurable difference. If nothing else, it is another debugging technique. Especially if the runaway process is the parent process . because that does not exist under inetd mode. Also a good idea. That would be found in the log ASAP certainly with a high debug level. Might fill the filesystem for the log if that is so :) Does FreeBSD support kill -9 (or is it 11?) that forces a core dump? If so, when you kill it and leave a core file, you can use the debugger on that core file and see what it is doing. Look at the stack trace. You may need several to catch the problem. If it is simply in a read() type state then the other machine is streaming you. If it is loop around you should see it in a different place in each core file (the odds of hitting the same line of code when kill it every time are not good). I do not know what debuggers you have (gdb?) but that is another trick.
